Shinjuku-Gyoen is one of Tokyo's largest parks, covering 58 hectares (in the city center). After serving as a garden for the Imperial Family since the early twentieth century, it was opened to the public in 1949. Shinjuku Gyoen has three different types of gardens: a beautifully planned, formal French garden, a traditional Japanese "Niwa" with teahouses, and an English landscape with vast lawns. There are also numerous types of vegetation as well as a greenhouse (the greenhouse is being reconstructed until 2011). Shinjuku Gyoen also features over a dozen different kinds of cherry trees, making it one of Tokyo's most popular and romantic Hanami destinations in late March and early April.
